Channel Status:    ** Open - USCG PORT CONDITION RECOVERY ** SEE MSIB 14-17 (LC) – Outer bar surveys have been completed and Max Channel Draft Restricted to 37’00” FW remains in effect:   quote

All,

Good afternoon.  The ACOE, LC Pilots, and CG had a discussion today to go over the results of the cross-channel surveys completed by the ACOE over the past two days.

First off, I greatly appreciate the work done by the ACOE crews to survey and then compare the results pre- vs post- storm.  It is extremely helpful in terms of our overall post-storm risk assessment.

Based on the analysis of the surveys, there were several areas of shoaling as a result of Harvey, in some cases up to 3' of shoaling on the bar channel.  As a result, it is necessary to maintain the limiting draft in the Calcasieu River Ship Channel to 37 feet fresh water.  Again, the Calcasieu River Ship Channel draft restriction will remain 37 feet fresh water at this time.

The ACOE is already working on plans and alternative to mitigate the shoaling areas identified.  Possibilities include short term redirects of hopper dredges and supplemental storm funding requests that have already been placed. The ACOE is doing what they can to get us back to project depth in as short a time as possible.

I know that this information is not what I, or probably everyone else was hoping for.  However, I am thankful that we were able to get a survey conducted in a reasonable amount of time,  that we have not gotten into a situation where a vessel has gotten itself stuck in our channel. I believe that all in all, the waterway fared pretty well.

As additional information becomes available, we will pass it along.
