Lake Charles port, US agency sign lease deal 


LAKE CHARLES, La. -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection's field operations and Border Patrol offices have moved into a new building at the Port of Lake Charles. The American Press reported ( federal officials expect the new quarter to house the agency's growing staff in southwest Louisiana. Executive port director Bill Rase said the facility on Marine Street will be a base for extending the agency's operations into east Texas. Rase said the agency's expansion will be of value to Lake Charles as industrial expansion continues to grow and attract workers to the region. The agency will work with the port to check ships and freight entering the port and registered and meet crew requirements of federal maritime law. The Border Patrol will be assigned to take into custody anyone attempting to enter the country illegally. The port and the U.S. Government Services Administration signed a minimum 10-year lease to house the two agencies at the new facility. GSA provides office space, transportation and communications support to government agencies. Read more here:
